Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Everyone in Britain is protected. This is because the Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have.

Under the Equality Act, there are nine Protected Characteristics:

  1. Age
  2. Disability
  3. Gender reassignment
  4. Race
  5. Religion or belief
  6. Marriage or civil partnership
  7. Sex
  8. Sexual orientation
  9. Pregnancy and maternity

In September 2020, Ofsted published guidance for schools on teaching the protected characteristics in school, with the explanation that it is important that all children have an understanding of the world they are growing up in, having learned how to live alongside, and show respect for, a diverse range of people. When schools undergo Ofsted inspections, they are assessed on how well they equip children to do this.

We ensure that our children understand that:

  • Everyone is different
  • Our differences are celebrated
  • We are equal in our differences

At Southborough Primary School, the nine Protected Characteristics are actively promoted throughout school life. This is achieved through:

  • Our school ethos and core values
  • Our curriculum
  • Our positive behaviour policy
  • Positive role modelling by all adults
  • Strong engagement with parents and carers
  • Celebration assemblies
  • Promotion of British Values, SMSC, Equality and Diversity across the curriculum
  • PSHE, RE and RSE lessons
  • Sporting and cultural events
  • Enrichment opportunities
  • Pupil and staff voice
  • Educational visits and trips – Pioneer Passport
  • Career Week
  • Enterprise week
  • Links with the local community
  • Extra-curricular activities
  • Raising money for charities

We do not teach about all the protected characteristics in every year group. The curriculum is planned and delivered so that our pupils develop age appropriate knowledge and understanding during their time at Southborough Primary School. This is through stories, assemblies, special days and experiences – as well as more discrete teaching as the children move through the school.
