How Southborough Primary School is governed

Southborough Primary School is one of the schools in The Pioneer Academy, a multi-academy trust. The Trust is a charitable company, and its Board of Trustees is legally responsible for all its schools. The Trust website explains its governance, including its Members, Trustees and Scheme of Delegation: Governance.

    Our School Board

Every Pioneer Academy school has a School Board. The School Board is a committee of the Trust Board and is collectively accountable to the Trustees. Its responsibilities are set out in the Trust's Scheme of Delegation and its School Boards Governance Framework.

The School Board supports and challenges the headteacher on:

    • the school's vision and expectations, set by the Trust and the school together
    • the School Development Plan and how well it is working
    • how effective safeguarding is
    • the quality of education, including the curriculum and the progress and attainment of all pupils
    • pupils' behaviour and attitudes, including attendance
    • the wellbeing and personal development of pupils and staff
    • understanding the views of the school community

The School Board meets four times a year, and governors also visit the school to see the School Development Plan in action. Each School Board has a Chair, a Vice Chair, a Safeguarding Governor, an Inclusion Governor and an Attainment and Progress Governor.

Who sits on the School Board

    • the headteacher
    • 1 staff governors
    • 2 parent governors
    • 3 community governors

When more parents or staff stand than there are places, an election is held; otherwise those who stand are appointed by the School Board. Community governors are appointed by the School Board. Governors usually serve for four years. The Chair and Vice Chair must not be employed by the school or the Trust.

Governors' business interests and their attendance at meetings in the last school year are published on the Trust website: Business Interests and Meeting Attendance.
